Chinese Money Plant Care Guide
Pilea peperomioides
By the Plantshop.com Editorial Team · Updated · How we research · Report an error
Round, pancake-shaped leaves on long stems make the Chinese money plant (also called pilea, UFO plant or pancake plant) instantly recognizable. A healthy plant sends up baby plants from the soil, which is why owners call it the friendship plant.

Light
Bright indirect light; some gentle direct sun is fine. Rotate the pot every few weeks so growth stays even.
Water
When the top half of the soil is dry; leaves soften and droop slightly when thirsty. Always use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after watering. Plants use far less water in winter.
Humidity and temperature
Humidity: average. Most houseplants prefer 60-80°F (16-27°C) and dislike cold drafts and heating vents.
Soil and feeding
Use a well-draining potting mix with extra grit or perlite. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength; skip feeding in winter.
Our tip
Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or it will lean hard towards the window.
Common problems
- Leaning, leggy stem: Not enough light or not rotated. Rotate weekly; a tall stem can be cut and re-rooted.
- Drooping, yellow lower leaves: Usually overwatering or a pot that is too big.
- Cupped leaves: Often a sign it wants more light.
Pets
